Farmington, Maine

Two SR&RL tenders waiting their fate during Oct. 1937. Farmington, Maine.

This is one of the photos I purchased at the last Springfield train show...enjoy...George Dutka

This comment was posted in a Maine On2 yahoo group that may help one regarding this photos.

The short tender is from Forney No. 9, the longer tender is from No. 18. Number 9's tender wasn't used as a water car or something, this photo was simply taken while scrapping of the locomotives was in progress. Number 9 is in pieces while scrapping is ongoing.

NMRA Division Meet Sarnia

Simon Elbourne is the WOD modeler that built the diorama.

Our NMRA Western Ontario Division gathered in Sarnia for a day of make and take modeling. We had a number of displays with a couple in O scale and a On30" traveling display. Here are a few views of it...George Dutka

Module Reworking

Peter gave me some scrap foam he had in the garage about a year ago that has been cut and attached with carpenters glue.
Took this photo yesterday of Peter Mumby's module with a bit of Styrofoam added to the back for support. Now to add leftover face board to the rear to clean up the look. The jigsaw is used to trim the scene as I go along. A Masonite end cap will be made too...George Dutka

Module Being Reworked

All the details have been removed and a bit of track taken out before being cut to size. The backdrop is removed also and will not be used. The front skirting has been removed and cut to size for reuse.
I spent a bit of time yesterday altering Peter Mumby's module that connects to mine. I want it to be one foot wide (it is 18" at the moment) to fit on my wall. I began by removing all the trees, details and a bit of trackage. I then ran it through my table saw from the top and then the bottom. Areas that it did not cut through my jig saw took care if it. I will shore up the cut area with a strip of Styrofoam shortly.

The layout will be all modules with most being done with a foam base. More on how it is going shortly. It was an end of the day project and time ran out...George Dutka

About to be cut.

Six inches has been chopped of the module.

More Fairbanks Flagstop!

The finished model is resting on the MR article I used to inspire me through this build.
Here is more on the build of my Fairbanks flag stop...George Dutka

The trim although spray can painted green got a coating of PanPastel green to better reflect the fading of the green.

The walls also got a coat of PanPastel grey. I used two tones to get a faded effect.

The model is complete. I added a grey tarpaper roof to my model.

Maplewood Flag Stop

I noticed that on the SR&RL Facebook page the group raised the Maplewood flag stop off the ground a couple of weekend ago. Looks better and should last a lot longer too...George Dutka

Fairbanks, Maine Flagstop

The walls are made from styrene but I used wood for the corner trim and supports.
Here are some construction photos of my version of the SR&RL  Fairbanks, Maine flagstop. More to come...George Dutka

My walls are placed on the photo of the MR article I was working from.

Ready to be assembled

Ready for paint. Styrene roof is made. The window and doors are from Grandt Line parts package.

I used some wood trim to finish off the rear window as I seen in a photo I have and posted back in the summer.

Camo Coat green is applied on parts and Rust-Oleum primer is used on walls.
The sign in the MR article on the prototype photo was about the right size. So I photocopied it and used blue chalk around the lettering to get the coloring of the sign.

Sanders Drop-in Diorama

The structure is mounted on a piece of Gatorfoam which works very well as a base.
I had my small drop-in scene out the other day which I had took some photos of recently. I thought I would share them with you. I had covered how I built the structure a few years back here on the blog and also RMC...George Dutka

Coal Storage

I took this photo last November of my small diorama. A neat little model in O scale.
I built this cast plaster coal storage structure a number of years ago. I placed it on a small base for display but it will be used on an upcoming smaller On30" layout...George Dutka

WW&F - 2025 Model Railroad Planning

Here in Canada getting copies of railway magazines is getting hard with tariffs and the exchange of the dollar. Hobby shops, book stores, drugstores and grocery stores are dropping these magazines. I can see why with the changed approach MR is taking with returns. The last two hobby shops that I have been in don't carry MR anymore and RMC prices are now at least 15.95 which includes all the new costs the shops are facing.

Anyhow I recently did find a copy of Model Railroad Planning 2025. I was presently surprised to see a feature on modeling  the WW&F included done by Peter Leach. A great smaller layout built in a spare room. There is hope for us without much room to have a layout and not just build models. Great article and good work Peter...George Dutka

Fairbanks Flag Stop

The window and doorway are cut into the styrene. The O scale parts are from Grandt Line.
A bit more work has been done on the tiny flag stop structure...George Dutka

The photo in the article has the sign about O scale. I plan on making a photocopy of this sign and use it on my structure. Now to figure out what color the structure might have been at one time, I am assuming grey and green. I may just model it as the paint has been worn off.

Fairbanks, Maine

SR&RL plow 512 at Fairbanks during the winter of 1920. I picked up this view at the Springfield 2025 train show. I have only seen two other views of this flag stop. Both in Bob Jones book about the time it was abandoned and being used as a garden storage shed. This view shows a four pain window on the opposite end to the door. It also has corner trim not seen in the Jones book photos...George Dutka
