Merry Christmas 2018

Wintertime in Strong, Maine along the two footers.
A Merry Christmas. I hope my views of narrow gauge and how it is modeled on my blog has been interesting this past year and I hope you check back in the New Year to see what I am up to in HOn30" and On30"...George Dutka

Modeling a Roof

A second look at the roofing on this Bachmann model's. The brown colour of the roof has been worn off to a grey black colouring.
This weeks wordless Wednesday photo is of a On30" Bachmann model seen at Trainfest in November. I really liked how the roof was finished with a brakeman perched on top. One can easily paint the roof with Floquil grime then dirty it up with PanPastels. Model Master wood colour could easily be brushed on for the same base color effect followed by some grays and black tones. Note the roof walk still has a lot of brown colouring left in it. Anyhow the roof finish is what makes this car stand out and can be easily used on my Maine two footers...George Dutka

Rusty Old Roof

My Bar Mills structure now has a few rust spots on the roof giving it a more worn look.
My general store got a new look to the roof. This is the third look to the roofing since I built the structure. As I learn new techniques things change on my W&Q Ry. module...George Dutka

The rust spots are done first with Acrylic tube paints burnt sienna and raw umber. Once dried some Bragdon rusts are streaked from these locations.
I worked the rust in around the edges and along the seams. Not a lot but enough to stand out a bit.

Weathered Details

I decided to rust up the old post office box and Coke sign on my On30 W&Q Ry.
Here are a couple of O scale details from Bar Mills that I added some additional weathering to...George Dutka

The fire hydrant also got a few rust spots and stains.

Expo 2018 Display - On30" Combine

I really enjoyed the looks of this combine. The weathering was really well done. I think I might try this myself shortly.
On the On30" display module at this years Expo in Albany, NY the short train (engine and combine) shuffled back and forth over the modules for two days. The modules are great and I will cover them shortly. What I wanted to point out is the simple but detailed weathering-paint job on the Bachmann combine. Even though it had no number or markings it just seemed to belong in the scene...George Dutka

Fine Scale Expo 2018 - Contest Diorama

Tons of details on this HO scale diorama.
I thought this was by far the best contest diorama on display at this years Fine Scale Expo. I thought I would share a few of the views I took of the structure...George Dutka

An overall view of the scene.

Portland Signs

A closer look at this weeks Wordless Wednesday. Along the waterfront in Portland, Maine there is a few active fishing piers that have some interesting signs that I though one could photocopy and add to a structure. Here are a few signs that could be a good start.

Fall Update

FOS Scale Models crates I had ordered this fall. I have built some earlier this year and they turn out really nice. Now I have more to add interest to my scenes.
I have not been doing any narrow gauge modeling over the summer but a few projects are in the works for this winter. One is a waterfront diorama which will feature some HOn30" trackage. A second project is an wayside tool car for my On30" module. I originally was going to use a standard old O scale boxcar. But it looks way to big for the module. I found a part built narrow gauge stock car that will work a lot better. It is going to be really beaten up and heavily weathered. Looking forward to getting started at this shortly. I have a good amount of water views from around Portland, Maine that will help as inspiration that I plan to post also....so I hope you follow along over the winter months...George Dutka

My O narrow gauge stock car that will become a storage shed on blocks for my next On30" module. It will get a good weathering job. An article on building a Maine 2 foot stock car was in RMC a number of years ago built by Trevor Marshall.
This is a module built by Dave Frary at an early model railroad Expo. I hope to begin building a water scene similar to this during the winter months.

Water Tank - Upgraded

This tank I purchased assembled. Since then I have repainted and weathered it.
I purchased this water tank back last winter with a few other narrow gauge structures. All the structures needed some work and upgrading. This tank I repainted adding chain to the spout and PanPastel weathering. This past week I got around to adding a few ground detailing which finally finishes off the model...George Dutka

The tanks wooden supports are painted with Floquil grime. The spout is done with old silver then rusted up using acrylic's. I added an old ladder which is from a AHM fire house kit. Some wood boards and ground foam finishes it off. It can now be dropped in any available scene.
A Juneco barrel is added to one corner. Ground foam is added all along the base. Brick Mortar Formula is applied to the brick. Once dry it is rubbed off the brick facing.

Trackside view. The tank was sprayed black then weathered with PanPastels. The finial and roof ribs are painted Floquil jade. The window and door are coloured with Bragdon powder green.

Craftsman Jason Jensen

I came across a very talented structure modeler, Jason Jensen's who posts on Facebook on a regular basis. He is very good at grouping structures together to make one scene. He will be at this years Fine Scale Modelers Expo in Albany. For extra information and photos check out my post on the White River Division blog...George Dutka

A very creative idea for the use of three kits.
